STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT (E3)
PRACTICE TASKS
EXERCISE 1
UPDATE
It is early one Monday morning, and Paul Pau asks you to step into his office. He starts to speak:
TRIGGER
“Gal Yaluz has asked me to help her prepare a response to a letter we have received GXK Fund
Management, one of Vita’s largest shareholders. Here is a copy for your reference. She has asked
me to put together a briefing paper identifying ways in which Vita could grow, but unfortunately I
am busy all morning with meetings and she needs a response by lunchtime; could you please put
some ideas down in an email? I suggest you use a framework such as Ansoff’s matrix to give your
notes structure.
Secondly, I am about to tell you something in the strictest confidence, and need you to promise
that you will not mention it to anybody else. I received a telephone call from GXK just a moment
ago; it seems that the letter they sent is out of professional courtesy to Gal, but they are not
convinced that she is the right person to take Vita further forward. They acknowledge her talent
in co-founding our company, but are less sure that she has the necessary strategic vision to help
achieve what Vita is capable of.
They asked me, in confidence, if I would be prepared to accept their nomination to be CEO of Vita.
I will admit, this has come as some surprise to me, and I have not yet decided what I should do. If I
were to come to you for help on this matter over the coming days, would you feel able to assist
me without telling anybody else at Vita?
I’d be grateful to receive your response on both matters by mid-morning.”
