Coastline changes are caused by Jakarta 1744 Jakarta 2007
the rise and fall of the sea level
and also by the accumulation
of sediment that is carried from
inland by the movement of
water. The coastline of Jakarta
is subject to such processes. The
figure on the right shows how
the morphology of Jakarta’s
coastline has changed between
1625 and 1977.

In the present era, technological and scientific advances have made it possible for
people to construct defenses against the sea. Breakwaters and coastal defenses appear as
straight lines on a satellite map, in marked contrast to the natural contours of the coast, as
in the graphic showing the entrance to Sunda Kelapa harbor. Useful as these constructions
are, they can also bring about unwanted processes such as the build up of sediments which
may alter the coastline in the future.
