                        THE JAZZ SIPPER

  Vance remembered asking Francesca if she could ever see herself living in
the U.S.; she just smiled and asked Vance the same question about him living
in Europe. They both knew each other’s answer. Even though they were into
each other, they were still worlds apart as far as their personal culture. Before
they had consummated their friendship for the first time she had asked him if
it was true that a sailor has a girl in every port. Vance had heard people say
that before but never had given it any thought until then; Vance smiled and
said no, that is not true. Then Vance asked her was it true that a girl in every
port has a guy on every ship; she smiled and said no that is not true. They
both laughed, then Francesca said, but I do have one Jazzsipper off a big
ship. Vance thought about the word description and how it perfectly described
his love for Jazz. He announced out loud that from that point going forward
he would be described as a Jazzsipper, then he said that would be a great
name for a Jazz club. Francesca said no, no name it Francesca, he realized
that in Europe most businesses were named after someone. Like Francesca’s
father Leather Specialty Boutiques, they were named Beninati after
Francesca’s family last name. In the states businesses were more descriptive
of the business functionality. Such as The Foxtrot, a club in the Norfolk
Virginia area that Vance hung out at, the name said everything, it was the
draw.

  The last time Vance had talked to Regina was shortly after she had left New
Orleans, but he found himself constantly thinking about her. He did receive a
couple of letters from her; she tried to explain what had happened. How her
cousin Dee Dee had not been passing his messages to her and how much
she wanted to talk with him. But, Vance felt that her explanations of what had
happened were weak. Even though he and Francesca were worlds apart they
