THE JAZZ SIPPER
over it. They use to go back and forth like that always, laughing and joking at
each other the whole time.
When Regina called Dee Dee and told her about meeting Vance, Dee Dee
said run, run, they’re shooting referring to how Regina met Vance. Dee Dee
was drilling Regina on her decision to date Vance, telling her that she had
been accepted to one of the most prestige law schools in the country. And
Vance seems to be caught up in the street life, she was going north and he
was going south. Regina tried telling her he’s not like that he was in the wrong
place at the wrong time, yeah sure! Dee Dee said, like hanging in the streets
being shot at, when he should have been at home during what you are doing,
getting it together and preparing for his future vice learning the crime trade.
Dee Dee asked Regina the same question that Vance had asked her on many
occasions since they had been dating, did you tell your dad yet. Regina had
not because she knew what the outcome would be, her dad would not approve
of Vance and nor would Vance approve of her dad, she thought.
They were different on many fronts her dad was stern and bull headed, to
him life was something you went out and work towards. Vance view was that
life was something that happens to you and you went out and made the best
of the life you was given. When Vance met her mother they hit it off well.
Regina’s mother told her that Vance had the right stuff and she could see why
she lit up around him and she felt a sense of genuineness about him. Her
mother knew about this from the type of work she did. So she could see her
mother liking Vance, but with her dad it was a different story she could hear
her dad saying, baby girl, have you lost your ever-lasting mind. This guy is
headed for trouble and he will bring you right along with him. Her dad would
never see the side she sees in Vance, the suddenness of his inner thoughts.
