conversation, one that she often looked back on whenever she found herself
at the crossroads of not knowing. Prior to meeting Vance, Regina had looked
forward to going away to college in New York after graduation. Her plan was
to leave for New York in March. Her birthday was February 20th; she would be
19 years old. She wanted to take her time to get setup and begin school in
the fall; so she would live with her cousin Dee Dee, who was born and raised
there. She would attend Law School at Columbia University in the City of New
York and work her way through school as a nursing assistant. Regina
remembered the crazy times her and Dee Dee would have when they visited
each other during summer vacations and holidays.
They would always find themselves on punishment for breaking their curfew
or the time they got caught smoking, Regina just smiled at the funny times her
and Dee Dee had shared throughout the years and wondered what would the
years to come hold for them. They were two peas from the same pod. Dee
Dee was much taller and with more of a light complexion than Regina, Regina
would always be joking with her about being from the white side of their family.
Even though their fathers were brothers, Dee Dee had the long straight hair
and many other features associated with being white mainly her greenish blue
eyes. It was rumored in the family that Dee Dee’s mother had an affair with a
white man but it was never confirmed. Dee Dee did not care what no one
thought about her, she was strong and independent. Dee Dee was the only
one who would call Regina, Gina, she used to say that the name Regina had
old connotations to it and Gina sounded more up to date and young. Regina
would say look here my crazy white cousin, I don’t care what you think, Regina
is my name and I like it, my name fit’s my personality and my mindset, so get
