project that had taken almost three years and many overseas trips to accomplish, but that lesson was fundamental. So what if it was hard.
A few minutes before the showing there was a sudden quieting; Swami appeared and sat two rows behind Philip and me. Aer such a flurry of fluster and frenzy, the time had finally arrived. I was overcome at seeing how my dream of working on a film had materialized. Aer three years of busy, focused work, we were ready to present it to our sweet Swami. I felt a rush of gratitude, but also a worry about the outcome. I could hear my inner voice remind me of Swami words, “Do your best and don’t worry about the outcome. Detach from the fruits of the labor.” But that’s easier said than done. For most of the viewing, I twisted around looking over my shoulder at Swami. He appeared aentive throughout the film.
Sai Baba’s Response
Aer the showing of the film, Sai Baba told Philip that it was a very nice film. However, Swami said nothing to me. In the following days, I gingerly approached both Easterners and Westerners for opinions. There was a myriad of comments, most in favor, and some with reservations. I had thoughts of wanting to help with the distribution of the film but wouldn’t take a step without word from Swami. We waited expectantly, and yet Swami did not call us, even up to the time we le for home. By this time, I knew not to push my agenda. Aer dedicating so much time and energy to the project, I was resigned to not proceed further unless I was directed to do so by him.
During my next trip to Swami, I asked what would become of the film. He simply said that there were a few problems and that he did not need a film. A respected devotee told me that Swami had mentioned in his presence that there was a problem with the dancers. Swami was referring to scenes in which two male dancers, representing Krishna and Arjuna, danced to a narration from the Bhagavad Gita.
