In addition, if the therapist understands and experiences the unconditional love of God, he can reflect this love to the patient. Oen, the patient is deeply affected by this unexpected show of steady balance and love from the therapist. This expression of love promotes trust and encourages the patient to change old reactions from the past and let go of inner conflict. Love in the form of a caring and understanding word, helps the patient understand, work through, and release conflicts.
Releasing Pain
We might not be able to release pain until the underlying conflicts from which it arose come to awareness and are resolved. Also, for some, pain becomes almost like a companion, and without it the person feels that he has lost something. As strange as that sounds, the giving up of suffering is sometimes accompanied by a feeling of loss. It is easier to see how loss of reputation, money, or position causes suffering and a feeling of emptiness. Like losing any false sense of self, we might feel uneasy and empty when we lose a long-standing pain and the behaviors and relationships that accompany it.
Even though we have a tendency to hold onto conflicts, we can learn from each other how to let go of them. The patient can learn detachment by observing the therapist practicing it. The therapist might melt his perception of the patient’s pain with devotional love. Or he might release negativity by breathing it out into a sacred sound. The patient can experience this release by the therapist without even a word being spoken. Also, when the patient sees that the therapist doesn’t respond negatively like the patient was expecting, trust and confidence develops. Detachment is liberating for both therapist and patient. As a detached witness we see the glory of divinity in both our inner and outer worlds.
