India. The husband described how he and his wife took the trip without any plan to see Sai Baba. On the way, his wife began reading about Sai. She was uncharacteristically drawn to what she read and developed a peculiar yearning to see him. The husband wasn’t keen to interrupt their plans in order to visit Sai Baba but went along to please his wife.
Swami was at his ashram in Brindavan, one of the locations of Sathya Sai Baba’s university campuses. Upon arriving at the ashram, they walked through a gated entranceway separating the confusion and squalor of street life from the serenity of the ashram. In the center of a large open area was a big tree, which provided shade from the hot sun. A few hundred people were siing on the ground waiting for Sai Baba to appear. The couple took their places; the men sat grouped on one side and the women on the other.
The Australian looked down a long cement driveway leading to a gate that led to the inner grounds where Sai Baba resided. Soon he saw Swami come through the gate and, to his amazement, walk slowly toward him. At that moment, he felt an uncanny connection. Swami came to within 10 feet and their eyes met, Swami’s gaze literally penetrating deep into the man’s soul. He immediately burst into tears, so piercing was the look. Swami then turned and continued his walk among the devotees.
When the couple reunited aer darshan (being in the presence of a holy one), the wife was alarmed at her reduced hulk of a husband. “What did he do to you?” she blurted.
