CALCULATION

Dose of novobiocin: 250 mg
According to BPC, Novobiocin calcium should be used. Thus, the equivalent of novobiocin calcium
should be calculated.
MW of novobiocin = 611.6

MW of novobiocin calcium = 1263.3

Thus, Novobiocin 611.6 – Dose 250 mg
Novobiocin calcium 1263.3  (1263.3 x 250 mg)/611.6

= 516 mg/dose of novobiocin calcium is needed.

COMPOUNDING PROCEDURE

1. An amber, non-fluted glass bottle (100 mL) was calibrated with distilled water by putting a marking
label at 100 mL level. The distilled water was discarded and the bottle was left to dry.

2. 5.16 g of novobiocin calcium and 3 g of compound tragacanth powder were weighed.
3. 20 mL of Syrup BP was measured by using a conical measure.

4. Novobiocin calcium and compound tragacanth powder were mixed in a mortar and triturated by using
a pestle until homogenous.

5. Syrup BP was added in portions into the powder mixture and was triturated well.

6. 20 mL of distilled water was measured by using a conical measure and added in portions into the
mortar. The mixture was triturated well. 1 mL of apple green 1% solution was measured by using a
pipette and transferred into the mortar and mixed well.
7. The mixture was transferred into the calibrated bottle by using a funnel. The mortar was rinsed with
a portion of distilled water and the washing was transferred into the bottle.
8. Distilled water was then added into the bottle until the calibrated mark (100 mL). The bottle was
capped and agitated until homogeneous. It was then labelled accordingly.
