INTRODUCTION
2020 was the most volatile year in recent memory with a long list of world-shifting events. From a deadly pandemic, to a global racial justice movement, to extreme climate-related disasters, to the United States’ presidential election, the year 2020 is certainly one for the history books.
With new travel bans, stay at home orders and social distancing requirements, the pandemic took its toll across the entertainment industry. Motion picture and television production sets went dark, live performances and concerts were canceled, movie theaters were forced to close, studios postponed releases and movie premieres and film festivals were halted or went virtual. Every aspect of the way entertainment is made and experienced around the world was impacted. As people were forced to stay at home, we saw an increase in online media consumption such as video on demand, download of apps, podcasts, gaming and online streaming services. Many studios made the unprecedented decision to release films straight to at-home streaming services or to move up VOD release dates for films that were recently in theaters.
Through it all, Sheppard Mullin remained steadfast in our commitment to client service. With our own team working remotely, and many juggling new homeschool and childcare challenges, we were right there, adapting to the constantly changing environment along with our clients. We are proud of the many successes we helped our clients achieve in a very tough year.
