   Chemical/Potential Energy in Bonding
CHEMICAL/POTENTIAL ENERGY IN BONDING: Energy stored in the bond
1. When bonds form, there’s an exothermic reaction:
a. Energy is released (exothermic—exit).
b. The reactant has more energy, and the product has less energy. c. Product becomes more stable (full valence shell).
2. When bonds break, there’s an endothermic reaction:
a. Energy is absorbed.
b. The atom gains energy.
c. Product becomes less stable (incomplete valence shell).
There are many Regents questions on this topic.
When you get together with friends (bonds form), you get wild together and release energy. When bonds form, they release energy.
