The closures put approximately 800 people - 80 employees at the Cambridge store
– out of work. It was estimated at the time all Knob Hill Farms’ buildings and their
surrounding lands were worth more than $100 million. But rumours of the potential
closure of the Cambridge store were already circulating after media reports
surfaced in February of 1999 that Knob Hill Farms was considering a proposal to
convert the local site into a high-profile trade/convention centre and hotel.
The projected cost was pinned at approximately $60-70 million, including a
$25 million hotel. The proposal was later withdrawn, eventually paving way for
Canadian Tire and Home Depot.
