There is no one right investment strategy for everyone. One size does not fit all! To make the right decisions for you, be aware of your unique values regarding money, and be conscious of your resources rather than taking them for granted. Often people who win the lottery will spend everything and end up right where they started financially because they begin to think they have all the resources in the world, when actually the amount of money they have is limited (even if there's quite a lot of it). They don't respect their resources by learning how to manage the money and will therefore spend it all quickly, often buying a big, expensive house and not accounting for upkeep costsfrom utilities and maintenance to property taxes.
Respecting your resources means honoring your abundance rather than squandering it without thinking. Be conscious of how much you have at the moment and appreciate it: Be grateful for it, and cultivate it so that it can grow even more.
A terrific way to learn how to be more conscious of your resources is to start keeping track of all the money you spend. This task can be time-consuming, but there are computer programs that can help, and if you use debit and credit cards, you'll have a clearer record of where your money goes. It takes a commitment of time and effort to watch where every penny goes for a month, and it also can be a challenge to resist judging yourself or feeling scared as you start to see just how much you're spending. Notice the negative feelings you create about money, and learn from them if you can (maybe the lesson is that you really don't want to maintain the habit of devoting your last minutes before bedtime to browsing Internet shopping sites!). Self-correct your spending if it feels right to do so, but don't get caught up in judging yourself.
The main purpose of this exercise is simply to become aware of what you're spending money on. Once you've tallied it all up, sit down-with your partner, if you have one-and analyze where your finances are going. Consider whether your habits are in sync with your unique values regarding wealth or whether they're just unconscious patterns. Ask yourself, What can I do to change those habits to make them more in line with how I actually want to spend my money?
