Welcome
On Celebration Day 2018, I spoke of the work of Prof. Adrian Furnham, Professor of Psychology at UCL, who has sought to identify the anatomy of the ‘game-changer’, some- one whose insights, visions and actions really change things.
Furnham believes that the future promises much for young people who possess an ability to imagine, to change the way we do things and take us to places we hadn’t thought possible.
There are numerous times when I think our boys, and the school, achieve the impossible and the improbable. In the academic year 2017-2018 our achievements included the following:
• We enjoyed our 10th consecutive year as London Schools’ Swimming Champions. •Jago, a member of Art Club, entered the commercial art world. Following the
sale of his beautiful pen and ink interpretation of a photograph, he has gone on
to sell a further 8 prints – another Warhol factory coming soon?
•We had 73 scholarships awarded by senior schools – a new school record!
• Nate from Y6, who successfully took his Grade 7 music exam for the double bass
and now plays with the National Children’s Orchestra.
•Felix, who started badminton at school three years ago and is now ranked 13th
in GB at Under 14s: he is being spoken about as a future Olympian.
• We were England Schools’ National Water-Polo nalists for the second time in
three years.
• Two of our Year 7 pupils, James and Omar, scored highly enough in the UK
MathematicsTrust’s Junior Maths Challenge to qualify for the Junior Maths Olympiad – an honour achieved by only around 1,200 (0.4%) of the 300,000 participants who take part in the Challenge.
•We held our inauguralTEDx Conference!
•Hamish,Year 7,competing for GB in Germany this summer at theWorld Cadet
Sailing Championships, for the fourth consecutive year.
The thought of our pupils being in a position as young adults to take us into uncharted waters is liberating, especially as Furnham has identi ed the characteristics of a game-changer as:
•ambitious and go-getting •focused and resilient •bright and imaginative •creative and quirky
This is music to our ears as we seek to prepare the school and our pupils for the exciting future that lies ahead.
