Module 1: Learning the Cognitive Framework Teacher’s Guide
Objective: Learning to form Harriet the Cow’s starting shape
Lesson Plan:
In small groups: each child in the group has a Write and Wipe Board, Introductory level and a suitable pen. Either on the carpet or at a table
1. “Let’s look at where Harriet the Cow is positioned when she is standing on the grass. Harriet the Cow is tall, and look, when she is standing on the grass she reaches up towards the clouds”.
2. “Her starting shape also starts at the grass and reaches up to the clouds”.
3. “Can you have a go at drawing the starting shape. Let’s do it together. Place your pen on the grass line. GO UP towards the cloud, STOP, COME BACK DOWN the same line and STOP at the grass”.
4. Give the children time to have a go at copying Harriet the Cow’s starting shape on their own Write and Wipe Board.
5. “Brilliant, well done everyone.”
More to Learn:
Encourage the children to verbally talk themselves through the sequence, starting on the grass, reaching up to the clouds and returning to the grass.
Connections:
Support:
Place the children in similar ability groups
for their fine motor skills. Those with
better fine motor actively have a go;
others can be shown the concepts using
the resources in the remedial cognitive pack.
• Link together the cognitive understanding of Harriet the Cow being tall and a straight line with the spatial position and motor skills.
