Module 1: Learning the Cognitive Framework Teacher’s Guide
Objective: Learning to form Georgia the Shetland Pony’s starting shape
Lesson Plan:
In small groups: each child in the group has a Write and Wipe Introductory level board and a suitable pen. Either on the carpet or at a table
1. “We have learnt how to write the starting shape for Harriet the Cow, now let’s look at the starting shape for Georgia the Shetland Pony.”
2. “Let’s look at where Georgia theShetland Pony is positioned when she is standing on the grass. Remember she is shorter than Harriet the Cow, and she reaches
up to the....” Leave a pause and ask the children to fill in “helicopter”.
3. “Her starting shape also starts at the grass andgoes up and over. Look it stops, and it turns around, back to the grass, before it GOES UP to complete the big round tummy.”
4. “Can you have a go at drawing Georgia the Shetland Pony’s starting shape? Let’s do it together. Place your pen on the grass line, GO UP and OVER, STOP and then COME BACK round to the grass, before finishing at the helicopter line”.
5. Give the children time to have a go at copying Georgia the Shetland Pony’s starting shape on their own Write and Wipe Board.
6. “Brilliant, well done everyone.”
More to Learn:
Encourage the children to verbally talk themselves through the sequence, starting on the grass, going up and over, stop, turn around ,come back round and finish off the round tummy.
Connections:
Support:
Place children in similar ability groups for
their fine motor skills. Those with better
fine motor skills actively have a go; others can be shown the concepts using the
resources in the Cognitive Games Pack.
• Link together the cognitive understanding of Georgia the Shetland Pony being short, round and turns around with the spatial position and motor skills.
