Module 2: Getting Ready for Writing Teacher’s Guide.
Objective: Drawing straight lines
Lesson Plan:
Developing early motor control in combination with eye-hand coordination linking Harriet the Cow with straight lines.
1. On a table provide the children with a copy of pages 70-71 from the Activities Manual or play the activities on the IWB programme and a selection of pencils.
2. Demonstrate and explain to the children that they are expected to follow the dotted line, drawing a straight line to complete the squares.
3. Using the worksheets on pages 72-73 in the Activities Manual or print off the same page from the IWB programme explain to the
children it is the same task. Ask them is they can trace over the lines or join the dots?
4. The children can then complete the worksheet independently.
Things to Consider:
Support:
Use hand over hand to help support young children so they can ‘feel’ the movement and understand how to control the movement in their upper limbs.
Use vertical surfaces. This helps with visual tracking.
Large movements are easier than small movements. Create opportunities to do similar activities within the classroom environment.
