Module 2: Getting Ready for Writing Teacher’s Guide.
Objective: Tracing Rupert the White Sheep’s starting shape.
Lesson Plan:
Linking Rupert the White Sheep with short straight lines whilst practising the lines on Illustrated Paper for spatial position.
1. On a table provide the children with a copy of pages 90-91 from the Activities Manual or print off page IWB224 from the IWB programme and a selection of pencils.
2. Reinforce to the children using the movement for Rupert the White Sheep taught in Module 1: Building the Cognitive Framework, that he stands on the grass and reaches up to the helicopter. Explain that Rupert the White Sheep’s head is there to show them where to start, go to and then end.
3. The children can then complete the worksheet independently.
Things to Consider:
1. Young children are very visual having a
completed worksheet will help children
to understand what is expected of them.
2. To add contrast to the learning, complete
Rupert the White Sheep lines after Georgia
the Shetland Pony and not Harriet the Cow.
3. Use the Wipe and Write Boards to
reinforce and help the children to practise writing the starting shape on Illustrated Paper.
4. Keep a record of each child’s performance. It represents the child’s readiness to
learn to write their letters.
Support:
Use hand over hand to help support young children so they can ‘feel’ the movement and understand how to control the movement in their upper limbs.
Use vertical surfaces. This helps with visual tracking.
Large movements are easier than small movements. Create opportunities to do similar activities within the classroom environment.
