P. 40

Objective: Copying Rupert the White Sheep’s shapes
Module 2: Getting Ready for Writing Teacher’s Guide.
   Lesson Plan:
Practising and showing competence at drawing straight lines, in isolation and in combination to form other shapes.
Linking Rupert the White Sheep with short straight lines
1. On a table provide the children with a copy of page 83 from the Activities Manual or print off page IWB233/235 from the IWB programme and a selection of pencils.
2. Demonstrate and explain to the children that they are expected to look at the shape in the first box and then copy the shape into the empty box.
3. The children can then complete the worksheet independently.
Things to consider:
1. Keep a record of each child’s performance.
It represents the development of visual-motor integration, a key skill that underpins readiness to learn to write.
Support:
1. Build in practical opportunities for children to
copy the position of the lines using sticks or pipe cleaners. Manipulating objects helps children to understand abstract concepts in a more concrete way.
