GRADE 12-A
The Objectives of Drop-Down Day on the topic “WATER
CONSERVATION” for 12 A was: -
➢ To aid students in applying their knowledge in real-life.
➢ To liberate students from the burden of ‘bookish learning’
➢ To create a thorough awareness among students about Ocean,
Ocean Conservation, Ocean Management and Ocean Pollution.
The different tasks of the event were distributed in groups of four
and one group was made in-charge of overseeing the smooth
functioning of the entire day.
The day began with the First group (in-charge group) explaining what
Drop Down Day is; clarifying that it is a day for students to free
themselves from books and apply their knowledge to discuss and solve
real-world problems. They elaborated on the concept of Ocean
Conservation and its objectives: - Conservation of terrestrial, marine
and avian life, Paying special attention to animals.
The session was concluded by conducting an on the spot ‘water
conservation’ badge making activity planned by the students and the
time allotted was 20 minutes. At the end of the activity students were
asked to wear the badges to represent their creativity and thought
process.
The second group handled topic of ‘Causes of Ocean Pollution’. Some of
the causes described by this group were Sewage, Toxic Chemicals from
industries, Plastics, Oil Spillage, Ocean Mining and Acid Rain. There
were class discussions held on how to treat Toxic chemicals from
Industries immediately after the sub-topic was explained. Some of the
solutions provided by students were described as to create more
Treatment Plants and provide larger funding for Research and
Development. Students also described a situation of ‘Metaphorical
Cooling’ created through their imagination.
Harmful effects of Ocean mining were discussed scientifically among all
students; where students came to know that the mining for silver, gold
and copper creates sulphide deposits affecting the pH level of ocean
and safety of marine life.
At the end of the second group’s presentation a home assignment was
given to students posing the question- Which branch of Science does
Oil spillage primarily belong to?
