I hear their calls, loud screeching, skitting high-pitched laughter, low grunting moans. The
wind sends snippets of the magic that lies beyond, teasing me. My imagination runs wild, I
imagine African plains, wandering rhinos, tall elegant giraffes and giddy monkeys. A pelican
has stopped by before, confirming that strange and wonderful things do live there and stoking
my desire to scale these walls and investigate.
But my life is here, my role to stand and listen, to contemplate, to guard, to think. My compa-
ny, my golden tree, a nod to nature’s futile attempt to take this castle back, she is all I need.
Her role to simply be and harbour the roosting crows that stop to investigate her branches,
search for leaves or berries, forage for what won’t be found. They sit in the branches contem-
plating me; contemplating them. Neither of us understanding why the other is here. I have a
lifetime, far longer than yours to work this all out, and many, many generations of crows and
drivers in their metal boxes will come and keep me company; sometimes I will stand here and
think, othertimes I will just stand here.

St Colman’s Cathedral - Infinity made Imaginable’
Following on from our previous highly successful Exhibitions, Cork Harbour Islands Project
(C.H.I.P.) would like to announce the Official Opening on Saturday 13th October, 2018 at 2pm
of our 2018 Exhibition St Colman’s Cathedral - Infinity made Imaginable’‘ in Cobh Maritime
Exhibition Building at Cobh Railway Station (many thanks to Cobh Maritime Development Com-
pany for the use of the Centre) and to cordially invite you to attend the Ceremony.
The Exhibition will focus on the all aspects of the Cathedral from its beginning, to those that
worked on it and also the huge social aspect it has played in the history of our town over the
last hundred years and more. In this regard we would still be delighted to receive any of your
photos of these social events such as Weddings, Christenings Confirmations, Communions
and any other photos/info you may have on the Cathedral. Also if you had any relatives who
worked on the Cathedral we would love to hear about them.
The Exhibition, which is Free will run for approximately 6 weeks and will be open every day
from 11-4pm.

Cobh Tidy Towns keeping up gold standards
With our 4th Gold medal in hand it is vital to keep standards up so we continue to meet ev-
ery Saturday at 10am at the Whitepoint Playground and welcome anyone who wishes to get
involved in our Saturday work or even in planning and projects behind the scenes. We began
painting of the crash barriers around town starting at the ferry.
All the summer bedding has been removed from our containers on the Rushbrooke approach
to town as well as Ticknock and the winter foliage and spring bulbs are going in. Litter picks
continue around town. To date our volunteers have picked a staggering 574 bags of litter from
the streets of Cobh! We need people to join us and help to look after their area to keep it lit-
ter free. We began an area enhancement project in Lower Midleton Street/ Old Street earlier
this year and it was great to see Cork County Council complete their part of the project by
resurfacing the road. This is a much used route for pedestrians approaching the Cathedral and
upper town so we are delighted to see the progress in the area.
All candidates in the Presidential Election were contacted by us regarding our Poster Free Zone
in Cobh. We are happy that those candidates erecting posters have respected the zone and 3
candidates are not using posters at all in their campaigns. Contact us on Facebook , Twitter,
email cobhtidytowns@gmail.com or phone 086 0580606.
