Malvern high school is a fee-paying school,
located in Gauteng in a semi urban area called
Malvern in the city of Johannesburg
metropolitan municipality. The school vision
is for every leaner to feel valued and inspired in the innovative education system and its mission is
that they are committed to provide functional and modern schools that enable quality teaching and
learning that protect and promote the right of every leaner to quality, equitable and relevant
education. The school admitted 1000 leaners, majority of the leaners are from the middle-class
background, the school in none other than a previous model c or multi-racial school that was
dominated by leaners from top class and privileged backgrounds.
The school has 30 teachers, a principal, three deputy principals’ and eight non-teaching stuff. Most of
the teachers are lifelong learners as two of them have doctoral degrees and the young teachers are
doing their honours and master’s degrees in their respective fields. The external and internal building
of the school is well structured and fenced with fully furnished classrooms and staff rooms, a fully
equipped and resourced library and computer lab, a hall at the centre of the school and a lapper next
to the staff room as well as the carport facing the hall.
The school is regarded as a technical school with works shops for mechanical, civil, electrical and
technical science. The outside area and environment of the school is well paved with trees and plants
around the school accompanied by a beautiful fish pond surrounded the welcoming arms of the
humongous Marula trees, alongside the striking colours and exotic shapes of bird of paradise near the
principals’ office , the school has lot of facilities that promotes and encourages a positive teaching and
learning environment, the school has two soccer fields, a netball and a tennis court.
The school, however does not promote inclusion in a sense that there are no ramps to cater for leaners
with special needs. The school is furnished with resources that allow for traditional methods of
teaching. The computers and technological resources are in the Computer Applications Technology
classroom and the rest of the classes are deprived of technological resources such as interactive
whiteboards, projectors and computers. The school is not run by the principal and the entire staff but
the members of the community as well take part as the School Governing Body is dominated by the
members of the community and the school management team.
