Pastoral Care and Wellbeing
Janet Clarke Hall prides itself on being a friendly and supportive environment. Whilst we obviously
hope that your university and College experience will be a positive and enjoyable one, we
appreciate that there may be times when you feel like you need some guidance or support.
If you are going through a difficult time, having trouble adjusting to university or College life,
struggling academically, feel lonely or homesick, or just need to chat to someone about what is
going on in your life, staff are here to help you.
The Deputy Principal has responsibility for the provision of pastoral care across our community and,
along with the Dean of Studies and Resident Tutors, is very happy to speak with you about any issues
you may be experiencing and to help you identify the appropriate sources of support, referring you
to other health and wellbeing services if necessary. All pastoral care will be institutionally
confidential unless you or someone else is at risk of serious harm, or if you agree for the conversation
to be shared.
JCH has a clear duty of care to students, staff, and visitors and if a student’s life or anyone else’s life
is considered to be at risk, the Duty Tutor (or other staff member) will seek advice and discuss the
actions available with the Deputy Principal or Principal. Every student has this duty of care to their
fellow students. In cases where you believe there is a possibility of serious harm, you are obliged to
inform the Deputy Principal or another member of staff immediately of your concern.
Please see page 68 which lays out some of the issues that effect wellbeing and some suggestions
for avenues of support. There are a number of people at College who can help you or direct you
to professional services for further assistance.
