Tutorial Program
Janet Clarke Hall employs Resident and Non-Resident Tutors across a variety of disciplines to provide
teaching and academic guidance to all residents. The formal, weekly tutorials that they hold are
compulsory for first-year students. Where possible, we also seek to support those in higher years with
tutorials and consultations. In lieu of tutorials for non-University of Melbourne subjects, regular course
related consultations may be made available, where possible.
Your academic progress is assisted and monitored by Tutors in their role as mentors. In addition to
attending the tutorials, if you want or need to improve your work, you can ask a Tutor to organise a
subject consultation with you. Please note that all consultations need to be approved by the Dean
of Studies before being conducted. All Tutors and students must abide by Academic Integrity
policies as set out by the University.
In order to support you in your studies, the College will provide you with comprehensive academic
assistance. We offer the highest number of tutorials per capita of any College within the University
of Melbourne. Some tutorials may only have 2 or 3 students, so it is important that you contact your
Tutor if you are unable to attend a tutorial for any reason. If you repeatedly miss a tutorial or do not
send apologies with at least 24 hours’ notice, you will be asked to meet with the Dean of Studies.
The tutorials are provided by Resident or Non-Resident Tutors of the highest quality and are
conducted in the tutorial rooms on the ground floor and in Henderson House, and in some
circumstances, online.
For each tutorial held in JCH, evaluation reports will be issued to you near the mid-semester break
to allow you to comment on your performance in the tutorial and how you found the tutorial in
general. If you have any concerns about a subject or its tutorial, in the first instance speak to your
Tutor or your mentor and attempt to resolve your concerns. If you continue to have concerns or you
do not feel you can talk to them about it, please seek assistance from the Dean of Studies.
In cases where we are unable to provide for a subject at JCH, students have full access to the
intercollegiate tutorial program. This means that if a student would like to attend a tutorial held at
any other college for a subject not available at JCH, the College will arrange and cover the cost
of this. The Dean of Studies will have copies of the tutorial programs of the other colleges for students
to see what is available. If you feel you need support in a subject area, please see the Dean of
Studies, who will endeavour to find you appropriate assistance. If you feel you are struggling with
your studies or need to improve your academic skills in general, do not hesitate to seek assistance
from the Tutors or Dean of Studies.
