This is why I admire the English so much. They are utterly ruthless when needed

and have a sense of fairness which is frankly astonishing. You can read about
the sense of fairness under the English in my book Mean Streets - Life in the
Apartheid Police where I explain how Apartheid could happen legally in a God

fearing country: "What went wrong? The Nationalists came to power. It is as

simple as that and created Apartheid and the question is how? It is almost as
fascinating from a purely legal perspective as the question of how the Jewish
Holocaust could be legalised in Nazi Germany. Where were the catches and

balances to prevent such horrific abuse of State power? Simply, it was not there

for the political system of the Union of South Africa (founded in 1910 after the
Boer War) which created by the SA Police in 1913 is known as the Westminster

System. In practice this means that any law declared by parliament (as long as
the correct procedures were followed) is then the law of the country as soon as

the Prime Minister (later the President) signs it to law. There was no built-in
human rights constitution that could restrain them for parliament were sovereign

(above the law and they are the law) to be able to govern efficiently. If you are
my generation and older you may remember the term "parliamentary

sovereignty." It is extremely dangerous and exploded into Apartheid because of
the Afrikaner mentality for a lack of a better word for it did not occur in 47 other

countries that used the same system and you must ask why not? Once again we
are back to the prevailing mentality of racism that the white man knows better.

With the inbuilt sense of justice every Englishman seems to be born with the
lack of balances (human rights charters) were not a problem in England.

As long as the Queen is happy they are pretty fair in their outlook on life which
is often abused these days but anyway – another topic. Regrettably our

Nationalists soon proved to the world that they had no inbuilt sense of fairness

and especially not to their black servants who said "give me the right to vote on
the basis of one man one vote since I am also born here and lived here all my
life – in fact I am a South African even if black!" Thus they flatly refused and

tried all sorts of other nonsense to like “home lands” and oppressive laws to

keep themselves in power. They had wonderful excuses why they were right and
the rest of the world wrong but it all came down to political power or rather
               keeping it above all.
