2 THE EUROPEAN CRUISE TRAVELLER
Our research into the European cruise traveller indicates that the majority of those embarking on a cruise within the European region travel on longer duration trips of seven nights or more. Key drivers for travelling on a recreational cruise in the European region include a positive previous experience, illustrating how exceeding customer expectations is key to driving repeat cruising, and the cruise providing the opportunity to visit multiple locations.
In general terms, the European cruise traveller is satisfied with the offering cruise operators are providing, with 29% having their pre-trip expectations exceeded and 59% having their pre-trip expectations met. This being said, potential does exist to further improve satisfaction levels and ensure repeat cruising occurs within the region.
2.1 EUROPEAN CRUISE TRAVELLER TENDENCIES
2.1.1 CRUISE DURATION
Longer term cruises are the most prominent cruise type within the European region, driven by a higher than average popularity among older travellers. Older travellers are also significantly more likely to embark on extended cruises of 13 nights or more within the European region (20%).
The higher incidence of older travellers embarking on longer duration services is most likely driven by a greater proportion of available time, particularly among retirees. This being said, longer duration services are still the leading cruise type among younger passengers (potentially driven by a fairly high proportion of British and German passengers travelling to the Mediterranean from a domestic port). This being said, medium length services are significantly more popular among younger travellers.
The North European and Nordic region is the most popular in terms of short duration services.
