Warm Up: Benefit Basics
BENEFIT BASICS
Annual enrollment is your opportunity to change your enrollment elections. Once you elect your benefit
options, your elections remain in effect for the plan year. You may only change coverage due to a Qualifying
Life Event and must do so within 30 days of the event. Major League Baseball encourages you to review all
your benefits and choose the plans that best meet the needs of you and your family.
ELIGIBILITY
In general, full-time employees of the Baseball-Related Entities are eligible to participate in the Plan. Eligibility
details are specific to your Employer.
Dependent Eligibility:
• When you are enrolled, your eligible dependents, including your spouse and your children up to
age 26 are also enrolled. (You will be asked to complete an enrollment form so that Baseball
has the necessary information to enroll your dependents.)
• You may also enroll a domestic partner and his or her children up to age 26. Domestic partner
couples are defined as same- or opposite-gender couples who are unmarried and unrelated,
share a residence, and are emotionally and financially interdependent. In order to obtain
domestic partner coverage, you must complete an affidavit, which is available from the Human
Resources Department.
o Note: The fair market value of the domestic partner benefit is subject to federal tax under
Section 152 of the Internal Revenue Code and to state taxes, where applicable. If you
qualify for domestic partner coverage, you may wish to check with the Human
Resources Department about the fair market value of this coverage and the tax
implications before enrollment.
QUALIFYING LIFE EVENT (QLE)
The plan elections you make are effective for the entire plan year. You may not make changes to your
Benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, Life and Disability, and Flexible Spending Accounts) unless you
experience a life status change. Qualifying life status changes include:
• Marriage
• Divorce or legal separation
• Birth of your child
• Death of your spouse or dependent child
• Adoption of or placement for adoption of your child
• Change in employment status of employee, spouse or dependent child
• Qualification by the plan administrator of a child support order
• for medical coverage
• Entitlement to Medicare or Medicaid
Please contact your human resources department within 30 days of a qualifying life status change if you
wish to make changes to your plan elections.
