VEC
its previous location, held at the Sierra Vista campus. The increase in adult education for the district made the move to the vocational center viable.
“We’ve been trying to do this for a long time,” said Dinuba Unified’s Director of Instructional Services Barbara Theisen. “This isn’t something that happened overnight. We’ve been trying for several years.”
The VEC, or Vocational Educational Center, as it is referred to now, offers several classes for adult learners, including two new medical classes in high demand. The two medical classes, Pharmacy Tech, Medical Billing, area offered through an outside contractor called ProTrain. The classes are a combination of online and in-person sessions. Instructors are at the VEC two nights a week to offer the in person classes.
In addition, through ProTrain, there are approximately 300 other classes that can be taken that are strictly online.
Though the school district plans to add additional classes in the future, the two medical classes, according to Theisen, were added first because they represent the fastest growing job market in the Valley. Theisen says many of the students who have taken the pharmacy technician course in nearby Sanger often have jobs by the time they complete the program.
The pharmacy technician class begins on Feb. 26 at the Dinuba VEC. The medical billing class is scheduled to begin on Mar. 5. Both are 12-week classes.
In addition to the medical classes and other paid courses,

the VEC also hosts free classes as well. As part of the district’s Adult Education program, free classes are offered for adults looking to acquire their General Education Development (GED), with math classes available at the VEC, as well as free ESL (English as a Second Language) classes.
The welding classes are held at the Dinuba High School campus, where the school’s welding shops can facilitate the training. Theisen said those who complete the course receive certification as a welder, allowing them to apply for well- paying jobs.
Theisen said the district is currently negotiating with a company to bring in solar panel installation program. The classes would take place in a large shop at the far end of the building’s first floor.
The future of the building has far more potential at the end of the three-year lease. The district plans to purchase the building from the city at the end of the lease, which coincides with the city’s 20-year agreement with the terms of the grant.
Part of the plan is to complete the second level of the building, currently unfinished, doubling the usable space of the building to 22,000 square feet. There is even talk of moving the district office to the VEC.
And for the city of Dinuba, the deal with the school district is the perfect match.
"This is very exciting for the community," said Dinuba Assistant City Manager Daniel James. "And the downtown will benefit from all the foot traffic."
