Easter is a time to remember a significant event in history—the death and resurrection of Jesus,
and what that means for us today. We don’t have to wait until Easter Sunday to think about it, but can begin right now. It was on the cross that Jesus said some of the most powerful words ever heard. Let’s look at a

few of them: “Father, forgive
them, for they do not know what they do.” Instead of calling down curses on His persecutors, Jesus asked His Father
to forgive them.
Yes, Jesus’ enemies knew what they were doing, but didn’t
comprehend the full magnitude of it. Jesus only wanted them to experience God’s forgiveness and not God’s judgment.
You and I also need forgiveness. We’re all sinners, and deserve God’s justice, but Jesus extends to us His forgiveness. We don’t deserve to be forgiven, but Jesus made that possible when He died on the cross. Why not embrace what He offers us by recognizing our need of Him, and ask him to forgive us of our sins?

Experiencing God’s forgiveness also helps us to forgive others. This is part of the prayer that Jesus taught us—“forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” We don’t just forgive others because they need it, but because we need it, even if they haven’t asked for it.
Forgiveness is a choice, and with God’s help, we can choose to forgive. To learn more about the power of forgiveness and how it can change your life, I invite you to read the book Forgive to Live by Dick Tibbits.
“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Jesus wasn’t just God but also a man. He felt that His Father had forsaken Him as He hung on the cross. You see, God the Father took everyone’s sins and placed them on His Son. Jesus paid the price for our sins, so that we wouldn’t have to pay for them.
Why did Jesus do this? Because He loves us; He loves you and He loves me, and
He doesn’t want to spend an eternity in Heaven without us. This is what motivated Him to go to the cross and I hope that it motivates us to respond to the cross.
“It is finished!” You may be wondering why Jesus said that? What was finished was a plan that had been established
by God the Father and His Son Jesus
Arrests
“since the world began,” (Romans 16:25). Christians call this the plan of salvation, which called for Jesus to be born into
our world as a human (which is what Christmas is all about), and to live a life free from sin and as God’s perfect sacrifice, die on the cross for the sins of a guilty human race.
When Jesus died on that Friday many years ago, it appeared that everything had come to an end for Him; but God’s plan of salvation didn’t end there. His plan also included Jesus resurrecting from the grave (which is what Easter is all about) and ascending to Heaven.
Because Jesus conquered sin, He also conquered the grave. And by receiving Him into our hearts, we can experience His forgiveness and power to live a new life, and one day conquer the grave too and live forever. This is the meaning of Easter. It can give new meaning to our lives if we chose so. I invite you to make that decision today. God bless you.
