Help 'give cancer the boot' this Saturday
Contributed
The 2019 Dinuba Relay For Life event takes the track at Dinuba High School on Saturday morning. This annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society is an all-day event that runs from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and has something for everyone. It’s a day of celebration, inspiration and fellowship.
The gates will open at 6:00 a.m. and a pancake breakfast will be served by the Dinuba Lions club from 6:30 to 8 a.m. Survivor registration begins at 7:30 a.m.
The event officially kicks off with an Opening ceremony that at 9:00 a.m. with an invocation by Pastor Keven Huckaby, the national anthem
by Brady Jones and a proclamation by Dinuba Mayor Kuldip Thusu. Sponsors and teams will also be recognized, leading to the
survivors’ and caregivers’ lap at
9:30 a.m. After that, teams begin taking the track. Each team is committed to having at least one team member on the track at all times. This year’s theme – “Give Cancer the Boot” is sure to bring out the creative side of the teams at their campsites and on the track.
Relay is a fun-filled day of
celebration and inspiration from
dawn until dark. There will be entertainment and
music throughout the day. The highlight of Relay is the Luminaria ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening. This year’s speaker is Susie Pantoja. Luminaria bags – honoring those who are fighting cancer and remembering those lost to cancer - will line the track. Walking the track and reading the names on each luminaria bag is a powerful, moving experience. For some, it’s an opportunity to grieve, but it also offers hope and comfort. It’s a time to come together as a community to make a difference in the lives of our
friends and families who battle this disease.

Dave Stamey, a hidden Valley icon
Dinuba Lions Club to host intimate dinner and show featuring acclaimed Rural American West artist
their contributions to the American West. Costner will be inducted to the Hall of Great Western Performers while Stamey will be receiving the Chester A. Reynolds Memorial Award.
The biggest difference, however, is that most of us will only have the opportunities
to see Costner on the big screen or in the comfort of our homes while watching him on television. Stamey lives in a country home just outside of Orange Cove and if you haven’t caught a performance by the Western icon you will soon have your chance.
The Dinuba Lions Club will be hosting 'A Night with Dave Stamey’ on Apr. 27, after being fortunate enough to book the legendary musician for an intimate performance.

Two years ago, when SCA 20 was introduced on the State Senate, Dinuba led the charge against the bill that potentially would have meant the loss of millions of dollars in city revenue. The bill would have changed the appropriation of internet tax sales from 'point of sale' to 'point of delivery'.
Thanks to the lobbying efforts of Dinuba, and other cities that receive revenue from internet sales taxes like Fresno and Ontario, the bill was held off the November ballot.
The Dinuba City Council received an update on Tuesday from Richard Harmon of Townsend Public Affairs, Inc, who lobbies on behalf of the city on the current political climate in Sacramento and internet sales taxes was major part of the discussion.
A new bill, SB 531, has been introduced that will end internet sales tax agreements moving forward. Though, Harmon explained, the bill would not affect the city of Dinuba until the current agreement with Best Buy expires. He also mentioned a second bill, ACA 13, has been proposed that looks to do what SCA 20 attempted to do and move tax revenue to 'point of delivery'.
He stated that those who are looking to change the internet tax laws argue that some cities are being robbed of tax revenue.
"They say that cities are starving other cities who are making the purchases."
A vote on SB 531 is scheduled for April 24. Harmon stated he and a coalition are continuing to lobby on behalf of the city.
