Pastor's Corner
A Christian's response to addiction (Part three of four)
So far this month I’ve been exploring our Christian response to the problem of addiction, which comes in many
forms and many of us have different kinds of addiction, but why is this problem so prevalent in America? I am a pastor, not a psychologist or sociologist. But sometimes there’s a lot of
about lament, just being with your sadness and anger and grief when you experience a loss, expressing it to God, talking to others about it.) And in those cases, the family tries to skip over the grief, the sadness, the weight of loss they are going through.
That unprocessed grief always has consequences. Sometimes it comes through as depression or other mental illness. Sometimes it becomes an addiction- remember addictions are not all related to drugs and alcohol.
And this example of grieving the loss of a loved one can be understood to apply to lots of our life experiences where we don’t pause and acknowledge what we are feeling, usually pain of some kind.
But again, pain is hard to handle on your
own, it’s easier to “numb out” with a substance or other distraction. So what we need more of, to fight addiction, is human connection. People who look out for one another, who care for one another, who can be that person listening when someone has some grief of other pain to process. Our “rugged individualism” as Americans paired with the undying optimism, is having some awful consequences in our society. Next week: So what does a Christian response to addiction look like?
Michelle Magee is pastor of Palm United Methodist Church in Dinuba.

overlap in these fields. One simple observance is that our American society has a high level of optimism built into
it. We say things to each other like: Yes you can! Never give up! Try and try again! Everything will work out! This optimism has its strength but also its weakness. Sometimes
our undying American optimism does not let us examine the hard parts of life.
For example, as a pastor I have experience with grieving families. The families I worry most about are the ones who really don’t want to do much in the way of a funeral, don’t want to get involved in the planning, or don’t do anything
at all. The society around, the endless optimism, brings them the message, just get over it. He
or she is gone, there’s nothing you can do now. (This is, by the way, not very Biblical- there
are many Psalms and whole books of the Bible
