There has been plenty of success throughout the year and a number of standout performers. The LAD football team reached the quarterfinals of the Craftsman Cup competition, narrowly missing out on the semi-finals after a close game against 5 Rifles. Craftsman Hall has represented the UK Armed Forces Basket- ball Squad, travelling to Belgium to compete in the international SHAPE tournament. SSgt Marx received two first place awards and one second place award in the Army Single Lift Powerlift- ing Championships, Sgt Popplewell won a bronze medal in the Inter-Services Judo Championships and Craftsman Riley was selected for the REME Novice Snowboard Development Squad. For the exceptional provision of Equipment Support, Cpl Hosk- er and Cpl Baker received a Commanding Officer’s Commenda- tion and Cfn Pratt received both a Brigade Commander’s Com- mendation and the overall Outstanding Tradesman award.
As the end of 2019 beckoned, the Regiment marked the festival day of St. Eligius in the traditional fashion: celebrating the Regi- ment’s engineering prowess with a number of competitive en- gineering challenges. The celebrations consisted of Squadrons competing in a round robin of technically challenging and origi- nal tasks, some outstanding food provided by the Regiment’s chefs and a small amount of controlled carnage; culminating in a ‘Red Bull’ style soap-box race in a bid to be crowned win- ners. Owing to technically outstanding design and outlandishly gutsy piloting of the soap-box car, C Squadron emerged the win- ners and hold the Eligius Cup, until next year.
With no operational deployments planned for 2019 you would be forgiven in thinking that the Detachment would have a quiet year but, as always, this has not been the case. With the constant requirement to support the Regiment in camp and on exercise, requests for assistance from the wider Army, and sports and social events we have been just as occupied and active as ever.
Early in the New Year Lt Woodward and Pte Langhorn de- ployed as part of Battlegroup Headquarters on Exercise SPECU- LAR while WO2 Thornton and Sgt Tikoisuva were attached to 12 (Armoured Infantry) Brigade Headquarters during the same exercise. All involved had the opportunity to practice their in- field roles. Not content with just partaking, WO2 Thornton organised and ran Exercise IRON SKIRMISH; the first AGC exercise for Detachments across 3 UK Division which focused
