Gloucester Cathedral and the City of Gloucester hosted 1 RIFLES to a very special day in late November 2019. The Rifles County Colonel Tony Ayres, assisted by the Taunton office and Cathedral staff planned a very special Cathedral Service that was then bril- liantly executed by 1 RIFLES. The occasion was their return from Afghanistan (Op TORAL). The congregation included many from Gloucestershire ACF, veterans and their families, 1 RIFLES including several families, civic dignitaries and the public. All were informed of the battalion’s latest work and had the opportunity to reflect on the losses of all Riflemen in the Iraq and Afghanistan theatre of operations. It was a most moving and unique occasion and particular thanks go to each Rifleman that made an address.
All pillars of the Regiment participated in the march through the City that followed a circuitous route. The Band, Bugles and
1 RIFLES marched in both an easterly and northerly direction as they criss-crossed the Roman junction at the heart of the City. It was an impressive display heralded by patrolling Riflemen and Foxhound vehicles. In addition, over 100 Cadets and a further

100 veterans marched past the Guildhall and packed crowds; there was a real sense of
all supporting the returning Riflemen. The march was followed by a ‘pie and a pint’ generously provisioned by The New Inn and Butlers Venue Bar, both located within the City. Kind and heartfelt words were given by the Mayor, Councillor Colin Organ, to which Brigadier Charlie Maconochie responded. As old soldiers mixed with Riflemen there was a clear sense of comradeship and common purpose. Gloucester City Council had worked hard to make things happen, especially
with the management of developments in King Square enabling all elements to come together. Together with support from the Police, Gloucester showed the community cares about its Regiment and we remain most grateful for a very special day.
