A RIFLES Farewell to Lady Darnley
Among headline news from Herefordshire is the recent handover of the Lord-Lieutenant. Lady Darnley has stood down after 12 years and is succeeded by Mr Edward Harley. Within any county the Lord-Lieutenant is the representative of the Sovereign and senior public figure. Links between the office of Lord-Lieutenant and the Armed Forces, especially the Reserves, are enshrined over many centuries. Lady Darnley’s involvement with The Rifles has been exceptional. Within each of our counties, the Regiment has been extraordinarily well served by successive Lord-Lieutenants but we must never take this for granted. Understated and often unheralded, the support by the Lord-Lieu- tenant to our cadets, families and veterans
- in addition to reserves and regulars - goes a long way in helping to project the ethos of the Rifles within communities. It is
most fitting that Buglers from 1 RIFLES, on behalf of the Colonel Commandant and all Riflemen, were present at Lady Darnley’s farewell, together with County Colonel Andy Taylor and Lt Gen Sir John Foley.

     MUSEUMS IN THE WEST
Further assets in the West are three military museums: the Herefordshire Light Infantry Museum; the Soldiers’ of Gloucestershire Museum; and the Somerset Military Museum. As the country emerges from lockdown, our museums are amongst the first to open their doors to the public. Together with archives, they hold a treasure trove of objects and represent much of our collective memory. In time the stories of Riflemen from Hereford- shire, Gloucestershire, Bristol and Somerset will join those of their predecessors. We need today’s Riflemen to maintain links with their own counties and enable 21st Century stories to complement those from our long history. Hereford was particularly grateful to
the Army Sergeant Major and Rifleman, WO1 Gavin Paton, for taking the trouble to brief their museum’s AGM. Similarly it is hoped this new edition of Bugle, and a greater use of SWIFT, will help us all to be better connected.
