Installation of the Lord Mayor of Hull and Admiral of the Humber
The Lord Mayor’s Cadet, AC Josh Smith, was invited to attend the installation of the Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull and Admiral of the Humber.
He was introduced to guests Lord Prescott and also Amelia Franczak, the Young Mayor of Hull. This young lady is 12 years of age and is the City’s third Young Mayor. She was selected from 35 young people who applied and will attend the Hull Youth Parliament for the benefit of the young people of Hull. She will be concentrating on Nationalism and Racism.
      LIEUTENANT (SCC)
JANICE SPICER
MBE, RNR
This honour was first announced in early 2020, but due to Covid restrictions the actual presentation was put back to Sunday 24 October 2021. Janice chose not to go to Buckingham Palace to collect her Award and instead asked for it to be presented at the Unit attended by family, friends and the Ship’s Company.
The Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire, Mr James Dick OBE, made his first visit to TS Iron Duke. Also present was the Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull in her role as our President, accompanied by her Consort.
Covid protocols were observed within the Unit and our VIPs very kindly stepped outside for photographs without face coverings!
Janice joined the Girls’ Nautical Training Corps in 1968, undertaking a number of training roles to become the first female Commanding Officer of Hull Unit, although she has been our Operations Officer for a number of years now. Over the decades she has been tireless in her efforts to encourage young people to develop
and reach their full potential. Her commitment has stretched to outside the Unit into the
City and local community, becoming a prolific
fundraiser for worthwhile causes, whilst encouraging
the participation of the Sea Cadets and raising our
profile.
After the presentation, refreshments were served and everyone agreed, Janice thoroughly deserved this long overdue Award.
