JOINT SERVICE MOUNTAIN TRAINING WING (INDEFATIGABLE)
Capt (MAA) C Hames RAPTC – OC JSMTW (I)
Yes your eyes are not deceiving you; this long term main stream ‘gym bunny’ has stepped in as OC of a JSMTC wing! Thanks to Capt (MAA) Gary Logan RAPTC for a thorough and very well planned handover, great job and big boots to fill. I have to admit that in all my years the AT stream is not something I have fully embraced, or understood, because all the really hard work is done in the main stream world right? Wrong, I can honestly say I have been amazed as to what actually goes on. Now, I’m not saying that I want to be an ATI or indeed have the ability for it, but ATI’s work is really hard and for at least 4 months of the year in the most atrocious conditions. Trust me when I say that it can be considered on par with the pace of life in a deploying infantry battalion and often more uncomfortable.
JSMTW Indefatigable is the largest wing within JSMTC and as such takes the lion share of courses including the RAPTC class one course and Op TOSCA ATI development. On top of this we have the usual RMAS weeks and a constant stream of JSAT courses, very much a nonstop train, but great fun. JSMTC also deliver a wide range of concentrations and exercises at the very top end of the AT spectrum with first class instruction throughout the world, as will be highlighted upon by staff following this intro.
There are 9 military staff within the wing and 7 civilian, all absolutely fantastic and without them the wing simply would not operate, a huge thanks to all for your support. Congratulations to WO2 (QMSI) Phil Mellor and WO1 (RSM) Matt Fletcher RAPTC on their commissions and SSgt Rob Harden on promotion to WO2, very well deserved and good luck with taking over their new roles.

By the time this is in print I will have moved to AFC Harrogate to take over Imjin Platoon, what have I learnt? Well a great deal about the inner workings of AT in a short space of time. I feel that the RAPTC remains divided when it comes to instructor’s stream choices but we would all hugely benefit from learning more about each other’s roles.
