lads are not sneaking them out to play football!) And we certainly enjoyed our day of cake, holding a camp coffee morning in aid of MacMillan cancer support.
Taking the wing forward next year I hope to keep up our excellent standard of instruction. We plan to run another multiservice emergency action plan – with help from the coastguard. Even though we have the latest top technical kit for all our activities. We are particularly excited about using our new mountain bikes and our new indoor climbing wall.
WO2 Lingwood welcoming Sgt Meehan
Sgt Meehan has recently been seconded from his sunny posting in JSATWC to act as Chief Instructor at ATFW Castlemartin in South Wales. This new post has shown Sgt Meehan a new approach to Adventurous Training, although at a lower level than he has previously delivered, the outstanding venues of Pembrokeshire, and its diverse weather, provide great opportunity for a variety of high quality adventurous training. Despite leaving his family and relocating to less predictable climate Sgt Meehan has settled well and has implemented many changes at the Wing improving the training and developing the instructors and himself.
ADVENTUROUS TRAINING FOUNDATION WING (INVERNESS) (ATFW (I))
Sgt (SI) R Baird RAPTC
On completing the RAPTCI Class One course, I was eager to hit my first posting at ATFW (I) with an open mind. Not being an Adventurous Training Instructor (ATI), and being
assigned to an Adventurous Training Wing, I was slightly intrigued and curious as to what my new role would be within the Wing. After a short handover/takeover I took up my new role as the Training SNCO, which involves liaising with units who block book courses for their soldiers, booking Land Clearance and managing our Real Estate within Cameron Barracks.
After only a couple of months in post I was lucky enough to be included into the ATFW(I) staff training which involved a 2 week training exercise in Cyprus. The exercise was broken down to include two different disciplines, Sea kayaking and climbing. Alongside the technical side of each discipline we saw how the developmental piece could be delivered effectively in sync with each other. This approach has grown on me and I would say that this could be the way forward for Adventurous Training within the Joint Services.
ATFW (I) delivers its activities in a slightly different way to any other wing, with a more heightened focus on Personal Development. All courses are delivered by highly qualified civilian instructors who
bring a wealth of technical and developmental knowledge to the students.
The Wing has only a small pool of military and civil servants, the happy bunch are as follows:
