By the time this article is published ARTD will be a distant memory. As a result of the Training Governance Review (TGR) recommendations, the Executive Committee of the
Army Board (ECAB) directed BROADWAY 3 (BW3) to design two new 2* organisations as at 1 Apr 18.
Within Home Command (HC), BW3 will establish the 2* Army Recruiting and Initial Training Command (ARITC) organisation that will protect inflow and Gains to Trained Strength, and improve coherence for Officer and Soldier basic training. This will be based in Upavon and the PD staff lead will be Maj (MAA) Bob Whitaker RAPTC with OPCOM of RMAS Gp, ITG, Recruiting Gp and SCHINF.
Within Field Army (Fd Army), the established 2* Land Warfare Centre (LWC) will deliver all aspects of Fd Army Trade and Collective Training and oversee Warfare Development. This is to be based primarily in Warminster and the PD staff lead is the author, with OPCOM of CTG, ARMCEN, RSA, RSME, DCLPA and TACOM AACen. LWC will also have direct lines of authority

The LWC Operating Model (Fig 1) describes how LWC will achieve the General’s (DLW) end state, objectives and intent. The three outer circles depict the three principle functions responsible for Force Preparation: Execute, Plan and Programme, cohered by DLW and his core staff. The Army Physical Training System (APTS) will be developed into trade, individual and collective trg space to maintain the foundations and resilience of physical training; whilst more specific PD elements will be integrated into Mission Specific Trg (MST).
For the first time the RAPTC will have a staff officer directly in the Fd Army with the ability to change, direct and advise the Commander Field Army (CFA) CoC on PD related problems in both collective and individual trg based on proven scientific evidence. With hope and a little trepidation there may be change ahead!

When the SMAA offered me the chance to once again take up the appointment of OC Fox Coy at the Army Foundation College (Harrogate) it took me a ‘nano’ second to agree. The Army Foundation College is where we the Permanent Staff are able to influence the youngest members of the Armed Forces, the future leaders. It is an environment
where I started all those years ago, in what was then
called the Junior Army as a Royal Engineer Apprentice
and is a very rewarding assignment. Since I departed
last it has been under the watchful eye of Maj (MAA)
Richie Groves RAPTC and stepping into the breach
during a 4 month gapped period Capt (MAA) Lou
James RAPTC. Lou, I thank you for holding down
the fort and keeping both your OiC Imjin Pl (Rehab
Pl) and the Coy OCs position on the straight and
narrow, it was no easy task. Being in Command of a
Coy that is entirely PD focused is both a unique and
humbling experience, the very large RAPTCI/AAPTI
and Civilian PTI/ATI team I have under command
are both dedicated and focussed, which makes for
an extremely enjoyable assignment and the reason I
come to work with a smile on my face every morning.
AFC(H) of today is an enormously satisfying experience for both Permanent Staff and Junior Soldiers alike. The facilities here which include the P&RTC, L&IT and Rehabilitation departments are what stand the unit out from the crowd. Fox Coy manages what is the Jewel in the Crown of the college and I have yet to meet a visitor

Fox Coy will soon say farewell to WO1 (SMI) Will McKinsley, who departs both the college and the Army after 22 years’ exemplary service to a new and exciting career overseas. We wish him the very best of luck....stay fit stay strong.
Finally, if there are RAPTCIs out there who are looking for a challenging yet still very rewarding assignment, they should look no further than here; the unit is set in an idyllic location on the edge of a very lively North Yorkshire town and will provide you with numerous and rewarding challenges, some of which are highlighted by the team below.
