Going away with OYT on the Alba Explorer has to have been one of my biggest challenges in Cadets so far.
Myself and nine others spent a week learning skills, such as ropework, using a winch, helming, cleaning and maintenance of a vessel, basic navigation and much more. My favourite being helming (steering the boat) which was an important and exciting job, requiring lots of concentration especially on days with high winds.
Unfortunately, sea-sickness got the better of me on the first few days, but I eventually found my sea legs and had a phenomenal time learning about sailing in addition to getting to know the fellow cadets onboard.
Reflecting on the week, my highlight would be
our sail into Tobermory with the stars filling the sky and the supermoon on display. If you are interested in outdoor activities or a new challenge I definitely recommend signing up to next year’s voyage.
