CADET EXCHANGE
(IACE) USA 2022
By Cadet Warrant Officer Ella Olney-Watson
CWO Olney-Watson was part of the UK contingent who were selected to visit the United States and amongst the activities she participated in are those shown below.
We did what the locals call 'The Death Walk' which begins in Virginia at Arlington National Cemetery and ends at Washington Monument. We saw the changing of the guard which was extremely impressive and saw the tombs of the unknown. Then visited several monuments and museums before visiting the WW2 Monument and the Washington Monument. We
then came back and had dinner together before going on a night tour of the monuments, ending with Roosevelt's memorial.
We drove into Virginia and visited President Washington's family home, we then saw the Blue Ridge Mountains, and then went down into the caverns there and heard the natural organ.
The next day began with some AT activities at a centre, including a climbing race I tragically lost. We then travelled to a civil air patrol squadron and spoke to their staff and cadets.
We got the opportunity to fly in a Black Hawk Helicopter straight after breakfast which was so surreal, then headed to Langley Air Base to see the F22 Fighter Jets and spoke to a British pilot on an exchange programme. Finished the day with a sunset swim and some food.
We visited Norfolk Naval Base and saw the radar aircraft deployed from the Aircraft Carriers to support the fighter jets. Then we went down to Virginia Beach for an indoor skydive experience.
