Without giving any warning, Emma rushed under the tape and knelt beside the cage.
'It's all right, Badger. It's me, Emma. All your friends are waiting in Barns Wood. It's time for you to go home,' she whispered. 'Don't be afraid.'
Two dark watery eyes looked up at her and for the first time during her life, Emma understood the meaning of fear.
The people were quiet and controlled. Emma looked at the keeper as she placed her hand on the door catch. He nodded.
Nervous, and still talking, Emma released the catch and raised the door. She remained beside the cage looking down at Badger.
