He was cautious and waited before stepping away. With his nose low to the ground, he limped through the grass, raised his head and continued towards the river. Only when he thought it safe, did he turn to face Emma. It was as if he was saying thank you. As she stood by the empty cage a lump came into her throat, and tears rolled down her cheeks. In a low voice, she murmured to herself:
'Don't stop. Please, don't stop. Go home, Badger.'
After the badger disappeared over the bridge and into Barns Wood, the talking, clicking and cheering resonated across the meadow.

'Welcome home, Badger,' said Sophia, 'it's so good to see you.'
Badger looked around at the animals and was drawn to Charlie Rabbit standing with Sam Hedgehog and Alfie Squirrel. 'Where's Lottie?' Badger asked.
Charlie shook his head and lowered his eyes as tears rolled down his cheeks. He didn't have to speak. Somehow, Badger knew.
