Safety Memo #26 (I) Sickness and Measure (COVID-19)

What to do if you are sick
• Stay home and inform your colleagues.
• Contact your healthcare provider and the public health agency of the county that you live in and ask for details
on scheduling a COVID‐19 test.
• If testing results in a positive, stay home until recovery. Once recovered and all symptoms have disappeared,
keep in self‐quarantine for 14 days before coming back to work.
o If symptoms are severe, hospitalization is necessary until recovery.
o If symptoms are not severe, self‐quarantine shall suffice.
• If testing results in a negative, then stay home until recovery. After recovery, you may come back to work.

What to do if a family member is sick
• All family members should stay home if one member is sick.
• Follow the same steps above (contacting colleagues, healthcare provider, and the county; get tested)
• If a family member tests positive, all other family members should be tested as well and stay in self‐quarantine
for 14 days.

Measuring employees, field personal and visitors’ temperatures at worksite during the COVID‐19 pandemic. The
following is an excerpt from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and ACI guidance:

• Generally, measuring worksite body temperature is a medical examination to determine whether they have a
fever. Because the CDC and state/local health authorities have acknowledged community spread of COVID‐19
and issued attendant precautions, ACI may measure employees, field personal and visitors’ body temperature.

• ACI worksites may use a "No Touch Thermometer" if anyone’s body temperatures are found to be abnormal by
COVID‐19 infection. We do have a limited quantity that can be requested to Brian Shin, Safety Administrator.

• If they refuse temperature test, you can refuse to allow them to come to work. However, employers should be
aware that some people with influenza, including the 2009 H1N1 virus or COVID‐19, do not have a fever.
