LESSON 1 Bixertilelilis’a-lacom exe [(e-|m@elalaleriolatwemc-ri-lal@r-laremmeidele=

1 READ the conversation about a mysterious weather event. What is unusual about this kind
                         of weather?

Hey, Gino. You're not going to believe the article I just read on the Internet. It’s called
The Weather That Nobody Forecast. Listen to this:

“Brignoles, France... London, England... Naphlion, Greece ... Odzaci, Serbia...
Kansas City, United States. What do these towns and cities have in common? They have
all been the scene of a mysterious weather event. In all these locations, people have
reported at one time or another that they saw frogs coming down like rain from the
                                    ”
                                sky.
                     Gino: That can’t be true!

Krista: Well, the article says that a lot of climate scientists have tried to come up with an
explanation. That must mean they take the reports seriously, right?

Gino: I guess so. Have they figured out! why? What could possibly be causing frogs to fall
                                from the sky?
Krista: Well, according to some scientists, it could be waterspouts.
                     Gino: What’s a waterspout?

Krista: It’s a tornado? that forms over water and travels over land. Sometimes a waterspout
picks up animals and objects and carries them over long distances. So this is what
might be happening to the frogs. According to the theory, the strong winds pick up the
frogs and carry them along until they finally drop to the ground.

                     Gino: Incredible!
Krista: I know, but not everyone agrees with the waterspout theory. That may not be the right
explanation. The cause might be a powerful flow of air called an updraft, which can lift
small things such as frogs into the sky. However, no one has been able to prove either
theory, so frog rainfall is still a bit of a mystery.

1 figure out: to solve, understand
2 tornado: a violent wind storm with a tall column of air that spins very fast
