ANECDOTE

American novelist, critic, and editor William Dean Howells {1837-1920} is remembered,
along with Stephen Crane and Hamlin Garland, as one of the nineteenth century's most important
writers of realistic fiction. With The Rise of Silas Lapham he emerged as one of the most
influential authors of his day.

Much of Howells' writing was done at home, and each morning after breakfast Howell
would go up to a room at the top of the house where it was quiet and begin working. He did not
come downstairs again until lunchtime.

One spring Mrs. Howells hired a hefty young farm girl named Mary to help with the
housework. Several weeks passed without the girl's being given even a hint about why the master
of the house was always at home. It did not occur to the Howells that an explanation was
necessary.

The girls did not have the haziest idea about why Mr. Howells disappeared upstairs every
morning and she because concerned. Finally, one morning in the middle of how dashing she
stopped work and blasted out, "Excuse me, Mrs. Howells, I don't like to meddle, but I really feel
I ought to say something."

The girl, suddenly becoming bashful, blushed and began to fidget. "Well, as you know ...
that is to say … ," she groped for the right words. "You're paying me $4 a week, and, well, Mrs,
Howells…"

"I'm sorry, Mary, but we really can't pay more," interrupted the mistress of the house.

"Oh, it isn't that," replied the girl. "But, seeing how things are – Mr. Howells always here
at home I mean – I'd be willing to forfeit a dollar a week and take only three until he finds some
kind of job."
