THE NEO-GOTHIC CHURCH
Just over the avenue from the castle is the neo-Gothic Church. This style
is more elegant and graceful than that used in the castle. This church was
built in memory of Margaret Henry, so Mitchell wanted it to be elegant
and feminine just like her! We say neo-Gothic because neo means new;
this was the new version of the old style called Gothic. Over the years, the
church became very damp and was in danger of collapse. Hoping to save the church for future generations,
the nuns rescued it with a restoration plan that brought it back to its former beauty which we can enjoy
today.
A neo-Gothic building would usually have features such as these:
• Arched windows and doors
• Stone traceries filled with stained glass (traceries are windows with stone divides)
• Gargoyles (Little characters decorating the building, in Kylemore we have angels!)
• Elegant Spires
The church is nestled under the hillside in the Kylemore woodlands,
making it even more atmospheric, dramatic, and magical.
