No. 2 – Focusing Your Skills Using Job Listings
Estimated Time: 2 hours
Overview/Goals:
Employers write job advertisements and job descriptions that focus on the traits and skills they
want an employee to have. This activity will help you practice identifying the job skills the
employer wants.
This exercise will assist you in comparing what skills you have to the skills your potential
employer wants. It also will assist you in determining what skills you need to develop. You

will be able to determine you are a good fit for the employer, and more importantly, the
employer is a good fit for you.
Instructions:
This exercise consists of two steps: 1) Brainstorming a minimum of three keywords you would
use to search for a job, and 2) Identifying the skills required in a job advertisement.
For Evaluation Only
1. Start by choosing a job you would like to hold at some point during your career path. It
can be any job that may help you reach your career goals. Make a list of at least three
keywords or phrases you could use to search an Internet job site. Your keywords can
include things such as the job title, the industry the job is in, or the type of business.
2. Once you have identified your keywords, use an Internet job site (such as monster.com) to
locate three job advertisements for which you may want to apply. If you do not have
Internet access, use your local Sunday paper to find job ads. Based on the description of
the job advertisement, determine what skills and abilities you may need to get the job. Fill
in a minimum of four technical skills and four soft skills for each job advertisement.
Additionally, list all the special requirements the job ad lists.
