No. 1 – Your Career Portfolio Planner
Overview/Goals:
The Career Portfolio Planner is a log that allows you to easily track both the skills you have
and the skills you need. You will need to revisit your Career Portfolio Planner after you
complete every exercise in this workbook and fill in as many rows as you can. Do NOT fill
out any of the planner until you have completed an exercise.
Instructions:
The Career Portfolio Planner consists of two sections: Skills I HAVE and Skills I NEED. Fill
each section out as completely as possible after each exercise. The Tabbed Skill Area column
will be used in later exercises so do not panic if you are unsure what to put in it. Do not go on
to additional exercises until you have filled in as many rows as possible on both the HAVE
For Evaluation Only
and NEED planner sections.

Both sections of the Career Portfolio Planner look similar but have different purposes. The
Skills I HAVE section helps you better understand what you can already do. In this section you
can list the different ways you can prove you have the skill.
The Skills I NEED section helps you realize what skills your future employers may want you to
have that you don’t have right now. In this section, you can list different methods for
developing or obtaining the skills you lack.
The first row in each section has been filled out for you to follow as an example. You may
want to list a skill more than once in order to show adequate proof of your abilities in that skill
area, or if your skill could be sorted into several different key skill areas.
Remember to revisit the Career Portfolio Planner each time you
discover a new skill you HAVE or NEED. This will make it easier to
create your career portfolio!
