FIVE WAYS TO HELP MISBEHAVING KIDS
“For a man to conquer himself is the first and
noblest of all victories”. Thus wrote the
th
philosopher Plato in the 4 century B.C., thereby
ins lling the idea that character is built upon
self control.
The assump on about the importance of
self control has profoundly shaped how
we think about behaviour, including that
of children. Many years of research and
experience have shown that rather than
needing more self control, children need
be er self regula on – a way to
understand and manage their stress and
energy to succeed in life.
Here are 5 steps that can help
parents/teachers/care givers to deal with
problema c behaviour or anxiety in children more
effec vely.
1. Recognise when children are over ANYAEGBU AMARACHI U.

2. Iden fy the stressors in children's lives
3. Reduce those stressors
4. Help children to find calming strategies that work for them
5. Take a long–term perspec ve
Following these steps does not guarantee that children will automa cally change a nega ve
behaviour into a posi ve one. Research has shown that these steps are powerful ways for
children to change their behaviour if they are followed consistently.
NOTE: When children see that you TRULY UNDERSTAND them and that you are COMMITTED to
doing what you can to HELP, it will go a long way toward improving your RELATIONSHIP with
them as well as their ability to cope with life's challenges. At the end, everyone's stress will also
be reduced.
