observation and still life
“Learn how to see.
Realize that everything connects
to everything else.” ~Leonardo Da Vinci
Observation drawing is one of the basic
fundamental skills when learning how to
draw. High school students learn the
di erence between drawing what you know
and drawing what you see. There are many
techniques used when drawing from observation. Students need to take
into account perspective, proportions, space, contrast and value. Students
practice various techniques of shading using lines, dots and blending. The
skills practiced here provide a never ending experience that improves with
practice.
drapery drawing and landscape painting
Another skill high school students have practiced is that of drapery
drawing and black and white landscape painting. These assignments
rely heavily on contrast. Students learn how light a ects an object
when directly applied. Students also study various types of drapery
folds: pipe, swoop and diaper. These folds help when drawing and
painting other objects to form a more realistic look.
